Industry rumours suggest leading GPS device makers Garmin and TomTom are both going to launch GPS handsets. Currently they both have software products for installation on smartphones, though neither is a major player in this sector yet; and TomTom unveiled a PND with a SIM card slot at this year’s CeBIT show.
TomTom’s Taiwanese manufacturers, Quanta Computer and Inventec Appliances, are both experienced handset makers; and Garmin is reportedly in negotiation with another Taiwan-based ODM handset manufacturer, Compal Communications. All parties have declined to comment on the speculations.
