Brunswick Corporation is selling its Navman operations to Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Mitac. The move will give Mitac about 20% of the market, comparable to Garmin. An early player in the satnav market and home to innovative ideas like Navpix, Navman began losing ground once TomTom got into gear;
Mitac has been doing pretty well of late in North America with its own satnav devices, but it’s likely that Navman will be retained as a brand name – perhaps for top-end products. Brunswick, a large and multi-branded company centred on power boats, engines and accessories, has been looking for buyers for all of its new-technology businesses since April 2006.
