Nokia 5500 SPORT

The 5500 Sport model is a bean-shaped body with an unusual square-shaped display, lots of rubber and steel, and resistance to splashes and dust.
It runs on Symbian 9.1, so it’s a genuine smartphone – but in a neat standard-size package. Clever extras include interesting backlighting effects (red when the ‘sport’ mode is active, green when you’re listening to music, white for standard phone functions).
That sport mode includes measure of calories burned, walking or running speed, distance covered, and more; and there’s a text-to-voice function too, so you don’t have to interrupt your exercising (the phone can read you your text messages, for instance, or report how many kilometres you’ve covered).
In use the 5500 feels comfortable enough – that bean shape works well in the hand – and the keyboard is generally adequate, with only a few really undersized keys. There’s not much internal memory for music, but Nokia is shipping the 5500 with a 64MB microSD card.
The worst features are the somewhat toy-like finish: at first sight the 5500 seems a bit cheap. But it’s very demonstratable – lots to show ‘n’ tell – and will appeal to a particular lifestyle purchaser.
