Nokia 6131

Nokia has given us an excellent phone here. At a pretty competitive price you get an attractive clamshell with two top-class colour displays, automatic opening system, radio, MP3 player, a memory card slot (hot-swappable),
Bluetooth, EDGE, nicely executed menu and control functions (apparently from the 6280), and plenty of user-configurable options. The matt plastic feels good and doesn’t show fingerprints easily. And there’s a Sudoku game on board.

All that should make the 6131 an easy sell. There are a couple of flies in the ointment; a megapixel camera looks weak in this specification, the camera key is too sensitive (it’s on the side and reacts instantly to the slightest pressure), the MP3 player is too simple, and the battery is a definite weak point. The video format is the outdated QCIF, at best 176x144 pixels. And the two other games provided are frankly boring ...

It took us a while to like the Nokia 6131. But eventually we were convinced by its elegant looks, two displays of exceptional quality, and a whole lot of user-friendliness at a very moderate price.

Successful midrange clamshell with good looks and ok spec
