O2's Ice Breaker

Networks & Network Services
O2 have become the first network in Europe to use Qualcomm's uiOne user interface and content platform.

The new Ice 3G handset from O2 will be the first handset to offer Qualcomm's intuitive UI, which allows users to personalise the menus to their own tastes. It will enable faster access to their favourite services, and O2 will be able to send information updates direct to the handset.

Qualcomm are a big name in the Far East and US markets with BREW, but have never quite made it into Europe until now. The company decided to release parts of the platform, such as uiOne, giving networks a choice of different services without having to take the whole package.

Herbert Vanhove, VP of Qualcomm Internet Services Europe, said: “The key driver of 3G and later HSDPA will be the user interface…which will ultimately drive data revenues. For operators it’s key to get consumers to engage with content services. With Ice, O2 is making operator-customised UIs a reality.”
