Samsung’s D840 is an Ultra Edition that looks very like the D900 … except that it’s mostly a bit thinner (though the camera sticks out to give the D840 a maximum 14mm thickness), has less impressive software (no sorting by first name in the phonebook, no profiles, no searching through videos or song lists), and sports a 2mp camera rather than the D900’s 3mp snapper.
It’s still a good looking slider phone with great build quality, very good reception, a big crisp display, and some good extras – the voice recognition stands out, the web browser is good, and the finish is impressive at resisting dirt and grubbiness. The MP3 player is accompanied by a decent 80MB of user memory, and you also get a hot-swappable microSD memory card slot.

The keypad is unexceptional, though the click feedback is better than the very similar D830 key layout and soft keys are big and comfortable to use. And as with most mid- to top-range Samsungs you get Picsel’s viewer for MS Office documents plus a TV-out facility (you’ll need your own cable).
