4D’s win was based on its installation of the UK’s first evaporative cooling system at its Byfleet data centre, 4D Surrey. The Eco Cooling units are the only ones designed to take into account European health and safety regulations and have cut the data centre’s current cooling load by 88%, as well as giving an estimated saving of 440,605 Kg of CO2 a year. The new system has also reduced 4D’s Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) to 1.146, making it one of the greenest data centres on the planet, along with pioneering installations built by Google and Facebook (which use similar technology).
