Aastra Extends Its Range Of Mobility Solutions With New WLAN Handset

Small and large companies can now leverage their existing wireless networks and easily create a highly scalable mobility solution with the new Aastra 312, a WLAN handset using SIP.

The new Aastra 312 combines the openness of SIP with the many benefits of Voice over WLAN (lower total cost of ownership and easier deployment by leveraging the existing wireless local area network infrastructure). This ensures the highest level of compatibility with most open-standard IP environments including Aastra’s PBXs supporting SIP.

The Aastra 312 has also been successfully tested with the most popular WLAN equipments broadening its appeal to a wide range of SMB and Enterprise customers, enterprises with multiple locations, or large campus environments with several buildings. With the Aastra 312, staff can stay in touch no matter where they go anywhere across the WLAN network with full roaming and hand-over between access points

Furthermore, for an enhanced productivity, the Aastra 312 offers to users the most popular telephony features of an office SIP phone while on the move on-site: call transfer, call forward, brokering, call waiting, hold, caller ID with name, do not disturb and call logs.

Henning Gmerek, Global Wireless Terminals and Infrastructure Manager for Aastra says, “Aastra has now one of the most comprehensive ranges of mobility solution and is ideally positioned to meet the requirements of the growing mobility market in the workspace. The Aastra 312 WLAN cordless handset brings the best of Voice over WLAN and exemplifies how best Aastra can bring the benefits of open standards for more mobility and productivity in the workspace.”

From small to very large deployments with thousands of users, the Aastra 312 can be rolled out very simply via DHCP, administered as a SIP extension and supports firmware update over air for easy upgrades (tftp, ftp, http). The memory card included in the handset not only stores the user’s phonebook (up to 100 entries) but also all details about the user’s profile (WLAN/SIP profile with encryption key, username, password, SIP registration and IP configuration). So if a new handset needs to be used, the memory card is the only thing to transfer.

Other features of the new Aastra 312 WLAN handset include a large back-lit colour LCD, back-lit keyboard, speakerphone and hands-free operation, headset connection, vibrating alarm and a user-friendly interface. The Aastra 312 supports the IEEE 802.11 b/g, 802.11e specifications for an improved voice quality and the following norms for confidentiality and security: WEP, WPA1-PSK, WPA2-PSK.
