Alcatel-Lucent helps enterprises communicate faster

Shared video sources like YouTube and Dailymotion have made video a preferred channel for communication, and transformed the delivery of shared information, taking it beyond entertainment to the popular "How to" type of information

Businesses catching on to this trend are using video as a vital communications tool for employees, partners and customers. As a result, video no longer is considered a waste of time in the enterprise as workers use video to share content the same way they use documents or presentations.

Alcatel-Lucent is taking steps to help businesses do more with video and expand the conversation beyond real time communication with the introduction of its OpenTouch Video Store (OTVS) collaboration application. Leveraging technology from Bell Labs, Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise OTVS makes it easier for businesses and employees to innovate, boost productivity and increase value in the business through the use of video. Enterprises can improve corporate communications, enhance idea sharing, reduce problem solving and decision making with instant access to video "big data."

OTVS is a software as a service (SaaS) video hosted solution, a first SaaS, cloud-based offering from Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise, that provides businesses and their employees with their own enterprise-grade 'YouTube-like' channel. Alcatel-Lucent business partners worldwide will be able to offer OTVS as a service regardless of the customers communications network infrastructure.

OTVS gives employees the ability to create, manage, and share content via a secure, confidential and private, reliable, enterprise-grade hosted video collaboration tool. Using any camera-enabled device, employees and businesses with geographically dispersed locations can use OTVS to share information, enable faster problem/resolution actions, and ultimately create a faster go to market for products or services leveraging the BYOD effect and reducing visual content production costs.

Though not required for use, the OpenTouch Suite of communications which offers a rich multimedia conversation, provides an enhanced user experience as it can leverage and integrate video content from OTVS into a broader environment.

Alcatel-Lucent has deployed OpenTouch Video Store throughout the company and branded it ALUTV. With approximately 25,000 active users, some 300,000 videos on average are watched per month for internal knowledge sharing, improved efficiency through collaboration, while cutting cost by removing outside agency involvement to create videos. In 2011, ALUTV was recognised as winner of the Intranet Innovation awards, a programme set up to recognise organisations that are delivering better and smarter intranets.

Blair Pleasant, Principal Analyst, COMMfusion, LLC commented "Visual media brings more than words to a project. Users are saying 'Show me, don't tell me.' Video creation and sharing tools are helping businesses to be more productive, while also meeting employees’ expectations, bridging the gap of the greater use of mobile video use in personal lives with their work life.

"YouTube has been one option for sharing video content, but the business loses control of the content once it’s posted. Enterprises need a secure way of sharing video, while still being able to manage the video content. The use of Alcatel-Lucent OpenTouch Video Store helps employees do this, making it easier for users to collaborate and foster innovation.

"By providing OpenTouch Video Store as a service, Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise gives users more flexibility, and can help go beyond video conferencing to enrich the user experience before, during and after the meeting."

Eric Penisson, General Manager Communications Business, Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise added "Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise solutions have always stood fast on improving the user experience. With the next generation OpenTouch communications platform and OpenTouch Video Store, we continue this by extending video beyond traditional use in the Enterprise and offer an environment that promotes Collaboration and Employee engagement."
