Alcatel-Lucent to Deploy Wireless Networks

Alcatel-Lucent say that secure and centrally managed Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) are being deployed at all three of Thames Valley University's campuses to provide students, staff and conference delegates with a flexible working environment.

Thames Valley University (TVU) is utilising these advanced technology capabilities to offer a competitive learning environment. Once the project is completed, 41,500 students will have the ability to securely access the university network and the public internet from anywhere on the sites.

The ongoing installation is being carried out by Alcatel-Lucent business partner Khipu Networks, and is based on Alcatel-Lucent's OmniAccess Wireless LAN (WLAN) technology integrated with Bradford Networks' network access control solutions. The first two phases of the deployment have been completed at TVU's Ealing and Slough campuses. The university's Reading campus sites will be the next locations to benefit from the wireless networks solutions.

Once the networks are deployed, students and staff will be merely required to complete a quick and easy registration form to connect personal laptops or desktop PCs to the university network and have access to shared documents, such as lecture notes. The networks will also improve interaction and collaboration among teaching staff and students.
