Alcatel-Lucent to enable Austria’s H3G with superfast fiber-optic network

Networks & Network Services
Alcatel-Lucent is enabling H3G, one of the leading mobile operators in Austria, to meet growing subscriber demand for mobile Internet, video and other data services by dramatically increasing the speed and capacity of its data network.

H3G Austria – which currently handles the largest volume of mobile broadband traffic of any operator in Austria - is to implement Alcatel-Lucent’s 100 gigabit per second (100G) optical coherent technology. Relatively simple, quick and highly cost effective, the solution is an in-service network upgrade, enabling H3G to expand network capacity over its existing fiber-optic infrastructure.

Matthias Baldermann, CTO of 3 Austria said: “Due to the rapid growth in 3G mobile broadband we are facing new challenges for our data network. Additionally, the introduction of LTE will increase the need for capacity. With Alcatel-Lucent’s help we will now have the most powerful data transport network in Austria, which will play an important role in maintaining our position as the leading provider of mobile data services. Also, because we are able to add these new capabilities to our existing network, we are able to move quickly to expand our services offerings without incurring a huge expense.”

Harald Himmer, Head of the Alcatel-Lucent business in Austria, said: “The adoption of smartphones and tablet devices, together with video, gaming, social networking and other broadband services, are driving up the volume of data being carried by mobile networks today. Alcatel-Lucent is continuously introducing innovations that enable operators to benefit from investments they have already made. The deployment of our 100G optical coherent technology with H3G Austria is a clear example of this approach. Alcatel-Lucent, which led the way in the introduction of 100G, remains the only vendor delivering this level of speed and capacity on existing networks.”

Under the agreement, Alcatel-Lucent will supply H3G Austria with its 100G coherent optical solution including the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) and the 1626 Light Manager (LM). The 1830 PSS offers exceptional capacity and performance for the transport of very large amounts of data over long distances, and brings together optical transport network (OTN) and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology onto a single platform, which simplifies operations and cuts costs. With the 1830 PSS and 1626 LM, H3G will be able to support a mixture of 10G, 40G and 100G channels on the same fiber pair, which means it can reuse its existing optical infrastructure and then upgrade and expand capacity on the network as needed to meet growing service demand.
