Audience voice processor provides advanced noise suppression

Networks & Network Services
Audience has announced that its voice processor based on the intelligence of the human hearing system powers SK Telecom’s new mobile phone offering, SKY Hush [IM-S350], available now in Korea. This is the second of the new Noise Suppression series of phones from SK Telecom (SKT) with Audience’s noise suppression technology, assuring consumers will have clear communications from almost anywhere.

Compared to existing technologies, which only amplify the sounds in a cellular phone conversation and do not discriminate between what’s important (the voices) and what’s not (the din and static), SKT’s noise suppression cell phones, the first being offered by a mobile carrier in Korea, are able to identify and separate the voice from the noise, thus effectively removing external disturbances.

Won H. Huh, senior researcher at SKY R&D Centre, stated: “We evaluated a number of noise suppression solutions and we found the Audience Voice Processor to be the most advanced in the market. It moves voice quality to a new level in our new phone. Our customers will be thrilled to use their phones in places previously unimaginable.”

The Audience Voice Processor is the first custom IC that is modeled after the most efficient and accurate auditory system, the human hearing system. By understanding the auditory pathway, from the cochlea to the brainstem to the thalamus and cortex, Audience is the first company to deliver a commercial product based on the science of Auditory Scene Analysis (ASA), or the grouping and processing of complex mixtures of sound. Because the Audience Voice Processor handles signals the way people actually perceive specific sounds, it is able to identify and suppress noise sources in an extremely efficient and accurate manner.
