BT Adds BlackBerry Service for SMBs

The problem with using a BlackBerry for most small organisations is that they don’t have their own MS Exchange Server installed. They might want a Blackberry but they can’t afford all the gear needed to power it up.

A new service from BT however may solve the problem. BT BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) is specially designed for small business customers. Using BIS, small enterprise users can send and receive e-mail from their BlackBerry without any further technology, that is without installing special server software or IT infrastructure. BIS can collate mail from up to ten existing accounts – or the user can set up an account specifically for their BlackBerry.

The new service provides small enterprises with all the benefits that bigger businesses get from BlackBerry, including mobile phone, web access and organiser. BIS pushes through new e-mail or diary dates to the user’s BlackBerry by synchronising with the office PC.

Businesses can also transform their BlackBerry into a full-scale satellite navigation system by attaching a tiny, lightweight add-on unit to the BlackBerry 8700.

Once the user enters in their destination details, the system feeds through turn-by-turn visual and voice-prompt directions. Because the system is server-based it will not cause memory overload problems with the user’s BlackBerry and it guarantees access to the most up-to-date directions based on the latest NAVTEQ maps.

BT has a special offer on Sat Nav, with the first three or six months Sat Nav rental free on one or two year contracts respectively with a BlackBerry 8700.

Bill Murphy, managing director, BT Business, said: “Being agile is essential to businesses of any size if they are to thrive in this changing world. BT’s BlackBerry Internet Service is the latest in our stream of innovative, converged services for businesses, helping them bring it all together and embrace responsive business practices without breaking their bank account.”
