Cable&Wireless Wins Global Government Telecoms Contract

Cable&Wireless Worldwide has signed a global telecoms framework contract with the UK Government, consisting of a highly resilient global network and a suite of advanced IP services. The FCO has become the first government department to purchase services from the framework in an £82 million, five and a half year partnership.

The network and infrastructure from C&W Worldwide is critical to the FCO, as it works to promote and protect Britain’s interests around the world and run a global network of over 200 Embassies, High Commissions and Consulates in more than 160 countries and dependencies. The contract will save the taxpayer £90 million and will help reduce the flight emissions and travel costs to the FCO through an increased use of reliable video conferencing.

Advanced IP services on offer through the framework will help drive value for money through the reuse of existing C&W Worldwide shared services as well as enabling FCO staff to share information and operate more efficiently.

Jim Marsh, Cable&Wireless Chief Executive Officer, Cable&Wireless Worldwide, said: “With our extensive, resilient and secure network, we’re the natural partner for the Government. We’re delighted that this groundbreaking framework is now in place and that we have our first contract in the FCO. We will assist the Government’s efficiency drive today, and provide real long-term value.”
