Cabling Specialist Wins Green Medal

‘Greening’ the way it does business has won cabling specialist Brand-Rex a significant environmental award.

The company’s speciality division, which is based in Leigh, Lancashire, won the inaugural Corporate Social Responsibility category at the final of the North of England Excellence awards.

As well as the work the company has done to green its operations, and reduce the impact it has on the environment, judges also recognised the business’s commitment to the local community and numerous charities.

The speciality division manufactures high performance electrical cables for the aerospace, automotive and rail industries. The cables are designed to perform in extreme environments.

Among measures undertaken by Brand-Rex to improve their environmental performance was the installation of thermal oxidisers to reduce harmful emissions from their plant. The company has also reduced its’ environmental impacts through successful waste minimisation strategies.

Brand-Rex has also redesigned some of its products, especially those in the automotive sector, replacing some of the materials they use with more environmentally-friendly alternatives.

Brand-Rex was invited to the awards after judges nominated the company as one of the four finalists in the ‘Private Sector under 250 Employees’ category.

The Awards seek to recognise excellent organisations through rigorous assessment against the requirements of the EFQM (European Foundation for Quality Management) Excellence Model. A team of experienced award assessors spent three days evaluating each company.

Brand-Rex staff were therefore delighted and honoured to win the prestigious and special award for Corporate Social Responsibility, which was presented by Bob Lawson, the chairman of environmental champions, Groundwork Trust.

General Manager, Steve Tickle, explains: “This a is a great achievement for everyone working at Leigh and fantastic recognition of the efforts and the commitment staff have put into improving our business and reducing our impact on the environment.

“The EFQM model, which we have been following for several years, is an excellent driver for continuous improvement within the company. But now the challenge is to come back next year and win the award again!”

During their visit to Brand-Rex the assessors noted: “There is a clear commitment to business improvement…There have been sustained improvements in key performance results, and the organisation has a clearly established and embedded core value framework. Its leaders demonstrate a strong commitment to achieving business improvements and reinforce a culture of excellence.”
