Croft Deploys the Biggest Wireless Network in the North

Croft Technology has increased communication links within the region by helping to deploy the biggest wireless network in the North.

As part of their ongoing partnership, Croft recently completed a two year programme on behalf of DurhamNet to install a wireless network which covers the whole of County Durham.

The network will be accessed by over 300 schools in the area and will also benefit the community, offering libraries and community centres access to the internet.

DurhamNet is a local authority partnership between Derwentside District Council and Durham County Council which was developed to bring high quality broadband infrastructure to support business, government and community development within County Durham.

In order to supply services throughout the region, DurhamNet‘s wireless network covers an area of approximately 2,500km sq, employing 160 nodes, which are made up of wireless technology and send the signals to schools and community buildings. Using wireless technology is eliminates the need for cables and circuits traditionally used by other providers.

Croft managed the roll out of and was responsible for liaising with schools and community amenities prior to the installation of the wireless network.

Iain Kennair, Enterprise Account Manager at Croft said: “This is a large project which covers a vast area. A dedicated team of Croft employees worked on the project to ensure that the roll-out was carried out efficiently and within tight timescales. In addition to our management role we have also identified locations, conducted site surveys and carried out the wireless installation.”

“It is extremely rewarding to be involved in such a community focused project. Wireless communications is an effective connectivity tool for large groups, and work particularly well in rural areas. By helping implementing DurhamNet’s new network, the whole community will have access to a range of services which otherwise may not have been possible. It’s a true testament to their vision”

Steve Hodgson, Divisional Head of IT at DurhamNet, commented: “The wireless network we have developed is an important communications project which will bring Internet access to many people in the community who currently don’t have any connection due to poor quality data communications networks. The project forms a fundamental infrastructure to engage all areas of the community and will improve communication provision throughout County Durham. Enhancing social inclusion through the use of technology is a primary goal of the DurhamNet Partnership.”

He added: “Croft has played a key role in the development of the project and their responsiveness, flexibility and attention to detail helped to ensure that the project has succeeded.”
