Football Season Kicks off with Mobile Apps

Digital sports specialists Perform has announced that they will be launching 16 new smart phone applications for some of the leading clubs across the Premier League, Football League and Scottish Premier League for the 2010/11 domestic season. Aston Villa and West Ham are among the sides involved in the forthcoming launch and follow the Spurs, Sunderland, and Newcastle applications that were launched earlier in the year.

On behalf of FL Interactive, Perform will also be launching applications for their eight Premier League clubs including Blackburn and Birmingham.

The services are launching based on the growing success of smartphone applications, particularly in the sports sector. The surge in ownership and usage of Apple’s iPhone, iTouch, iPad and other smart phone devices has led to the creation of new revenue streams and opportunities for football clubs to engage with their fans. Over the coming months the applications will also be enabled for Nokia’s OVI platform, Vodafone 360 as well as Android devices.

The applications, which will utilise the latest cross platform technology, offer a range of fan friendly features including video highlights and interviews, live scores and match day minute-by-minute text updates, audio commentary, latest (and archived) news, fixtures and league tables, club stats and interviews. There will also be push notification technology, giving fans goal flashes on match days to ensure that not a moment is missed. Much of the content available is exclusive to these mobile services.

Daryn Wober, Director of Mobile, Perform said: “The launch of this suite of applications highlights the growing demand from sports fans for smartphone enabled content. PERFORM believes that by working with official sports rights owners we can create compelling media rich mobile services utilising exclusive video and audio content. The Spurs application launched earlier in the year has already surpassed 20,000 downloads.”

The current line of apps is priced at £2.39 to download with subscription costing £2.39 per month, £6.49 for a three-month period or £24.99 for the year. Other clubs that have already launched are Wolves, Stoke, Bolton and Wigan with West Brom, Blackpool, and Scottish sides Hearts, Hibernian and Aberdeen set to launch for the 2010/11 campaign.
