GetJar hits 2 billion downloads

GetJar, the free app store, has just reached over two billion downloads, more than any other cross-platform app store. GetJar has been able to reach this number by providing its worldwide audience with over 150,000 applications, a database of applications that grows daily.

“We credit our growth in downloads to our open approach to the app marketplace,” said GetJar Founder and CEO, Ilja Laurs. “Giving developers for all platforms a free space to distribute their applications has proven popular to both developers and consumers.”

GetJar has always opened its doors to all operating systems, including: Android, Blackberry, Java, Symbian and Mobile Web, and currently has applications for over 2,500 devices.

User interest and downloads continue to be highest among games, social & messaging, entertainment, and productivity applications. Among the 2 billion downloads on GetJar, Facebook is the top most downloaded app with over 100 million downloads.

Facebook is not only the most downloaded app on GetJar, but GetJar has also reached one million Facebook Connect users, giving GetJar users one of the most social app store experiences.

“GetJar’s social aspects and free business model have been key to our growth, but even more growth is predicted,” said Laurs. “As we’ve seen Android interest increase, we’ve also seen interest in GetJar increase. With Android exclusives such as Angry Birds and Cut the Rope, GetJar has become an even bigger player in a field of giants and a destination for free Android apps.”
