Giesecke & Devrient supplies auto roaming SIMs to Kuwait

Networks & Network Services
Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) has received the first order for its SIM cards with the Auto Roaming application from the Kuwait Telecommunications Company (KTC), the third largest mobile service provider in Kuwait. KTC is a subsidiary of Saudi Telecom (STC). The mobile phone services are marketed under the name VIVA.

“The new SIM cards allow us to quickly provide a wide-scale roaming service. This is very important to our market success. After all, many of our customers want to be able to use their mobile phone when travelling abroad, not only in their home country”, explained Salman Al-Badran, chief technology officer at KTC.

Up to now, mobile phone companies have had to conclude numerous roaming agreements with other network operators to enable their services to function in other parts of the world. With the Auto Roaming application, which G&D offers for all JavaTM SIM card types, KTC only has to negotiate an agreement with one other operator on the use of its roaming functions.

KTC customers can benefit directly from this operator’s many roaming partners. In this way, small or new mobile phone companies like KTC gain the opportunity to provide extensive roaming services for their customers.

“The mobile phone market is toughly contested. Our SIM cards with the Auto Roaming application accelerate our customers’ access to the market considerably and enable them to operate worldwide at top speed. This is a crucial competitive advantage,” explained Dr. Klaus Vedder, head of the telecommunications division at Giesecke & Devrient.
