The jointly built network is based on ZTE’s latest Uni-RAN and Uni-Core solutions. It is H3G’s first commercial LTE network. As part of the project, ZTE will provide H3G Austria with LTE/HSPA+ equipment for major cities across the country and upgrade H3G Austria’s 3G core network to support LTE services. ZTE will also provide management and maintenance for the network.
H3G Austria CEO Jan Trionow and ZTE Senior Vice President Zhu Jinyun attended the launch announcement, which was held in Hong Kong. H3G Austria is a fully owned subsidiary of Hutchison 3G, a multinational mobile service provider that operates in several countries, including: Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy and the United Kingdom.
The LTE network in Austria was built to meet a rising demand for mobile broadband services in the country. It will dramatically reduce operating expenses and achieve flexible and efficient networking. During the network’s construction, utilisation of ZTE’s advanced self-optimising networks (SON) function enabled automatic deployment, transmission, download and activation of various software versions. This simplified LTE network planning, reduced construction time and manpower and improved performance. Further, ZTE is the first company to make an LTE eNode B support with a maximum uplink throughput of 300Mb and a maximum downlink throughput of 900Mb. This provides the processing capacity needed by a commercial network. The solution uses a commercially available DSP chip that is more advanced, stable and flexible than currently available industry solutions based on in-house developed ASICs. The ZTE solution is also more capable of supporting a future LTE-A protocol.

To date, ZTE has won 28 commercial LTE contracts globally, and has deployed test LTE networks in cooperation with more than 90 operators around the globe, including H3G, Telenor and Sonaecom in Europe and Softbank and CSL in Asia.
