Following in the footsteps of the JCB’s first world record breaker, the JCB Dieselmax car, the JCB Toughphone broke the world record at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Ashbourne, Derbyshire.
The JCB Toughphone survived the first drop of 1.6 metres with barely a scratch. The bucket of the JCB 3CX Digger was raised repeatedly until it reached its maximum height of 3.25 meters. The Toughphone hit the ground, bounced and continued to be 100% operational with no cracks or dents. The judges were able to continue making calls and sending texts, even after the 3.25 meter drop onto unforgiving concrete.
Guinness specified that the height from which the item is dropped must be measured and evidence of this had to be submitted, alongside the phone being fully functional following the drop. Only superficial cosmetic damage would be tolerated, even a small crack in the screen would have jeopardised the record attempt.
