Juniper Networks and Skylogic Win Innovation Award

Juniper Networks and Skylogic, the broadband affiliate of Eutelsat Communications, today announced they have together won the Wholesale Service Innovation award at the Global Telecoms Business (GTB) Innovation Awards 2011.

The award recognises Skylogic and Juniper Networks for expediting satellite broadband access in Europe while simultaneously lowering capital and operating costs for operators.

“In a world where broadband is recognized as an essential part of social and economic development, there are still millions of users not benefitting from a real broadband experience,” said Natale Lettieri, director of systems and services implementation at Skylogic.

“This award recognises our partnership with Juniper Networks and the work we have done to bring a new innovative solution to market, enabling everyone everywhere to benefit from high-speed Internet access,” added Paolo Rossi, Skylogic’s ground segment design manager for the KA-SAT High Throughput Satellite program that forms an innovative platform for consumer and professional broadband solutions in Europe and the Mediterranean Basin.

Based in Turin, Skylogic has developed its network for next-generation broadband access via KA-SAT, creating the integration between a satellite broadband access system, provided by ViaSat, and a backbone IP network provided by Juniper Networks.

Skylogic and Juniper Networks have made IP video distribution via satellite possible through enhancements to multiprotocol label switching (MPLS), enabling management of Point-to-Multipoint (P2MP) connectivity and efficient merging of multicast flexibility and optimization, and MPLS control and forwarding.

This application of advanced IP/MPLS technologies such as MPLS P2MP and NextGen-Multicast VPN (Virtual Private Networks) enables full control of traffic with efficient savings in terms of capital expenditure and operational expenditure, compared to legacy alternatives on the market. The solution, based on Juniper Networks’ single operating system, Junos, provides an advanced network that is simple to operate. In addition, the offer provides network virtualization so each wholesale customer has a personalized view of the network.

"We are dedicated to working hand-in-hand with partners and customers on innovative solutions that deliver the benefits of technology for business, people and marketplace. There are few better examples of this than boosting the availability of broadband as widely as possible,” said Sean Dolan, senior vice president of EMEA, Juniper Networks. "We are very proud to accept this joint award from GTB as recognition of what we have achieved so far with Skylogic."

The GTB Innovation Awards are designed to recognize innovative projects involving telecoms operators and service providers around the world, in association with their vendors and suppliers.
