The TWifi network will give the public free internet access within the designated area for three months following the launch date, and after that registered users will have 15 minutes a day free and the option of a low cost pay-as-you-go service. It will be quick and easy to sign up to the service which also gives users permanent free access to a range of designated websites which will include information on local attractions, shops, events and public services.
The TWifi will be deployed by MLL Telecom at no cost to the borough council and will use existing street furniture, mainly CCTV camera columns, for the equipment needed to provide the service.
Council cabinet member with responsibility for the project, Jane March, said: “This is an exciting project which we think will offer lots of benefits to users and be very helpful for our visitors.”
The first phase of the project is expected to be up and running in January with coverage in the wider town centre in a few months later. In the longer term the partnership offers the potential for improved broadband in the rural areas and business centres of the borough.
