MZA 2008 Q2 Shows Rise in Enterprise Sales Outweighing a Slowdown in SME Market

MZA has released its latest figures on the PBX and IP PBX market in the UK in its publication ”The UK Quarterly Corded PBX and IP PBX Report”. The report shows that the total market in Q2 2008 (period April to June 2008) registers an increase of 4% compared to the same quarter in 2007, reaching just over 726,000 extensions. Nevertheless, volumes are declining in the below 100 extensions market, which means that the increases are attributable to sales in the larger market segments.

The declines are recorded in the smallest size segments. The micro PBX, the other 2 to 10 extensions and the 11 to 30 extensions markets are down by 11%, 23% and 10% respectively. On the other hand, modest levels of growth have been achieved in the market segments between 30 and 100 extensions. In the above 100 extensions market, most activity is recorded in the 1001+ extensions segment. This means that the above 100 extensions market now accounts for 48% of the overall PBX market in the UK, which is significantly higher than the Western European average.

With a 16% market share, Nortel assumes leadership of the UK’s PBX market, while Mitel Networks moves into second position, benefitting from the acquisitions of Lake Communications and Inter-Tel. Aastra makes noteworthy gains in many market segments due to the acquisition of Ericsson, which completed during the course of Q2 2008. The report shows Mitel Networks as the leading manufacturer in the below 100 extensions category, followed by Nortel and Panasonic.

In the above 100 extensions market, Cisco continues to be market leader, followed by Nortel and Mitel Networks. The largest gain in market share came from Siemens, who improve significantly compared to Q2 2007.

IP Extensions Market

In Q2 2008, 47% of extensions deployed at the desktop in the UK are IP, compared to 37% in Q2 2007. In percentage terms, IP continues to grow at a higher rate in the below 100 extensions segment, where volumes increase by more than 60% compared to just over 20% in the above 100 extensions segment. IP extensions account for 26% of all extensions being sold in the below 100 extensions market, up from 15% in Q2 2007. Meanwhile, more than two-thirds of extensions in the above 100 extensions market are deployed as IP.

Cisco Systems represents around 30% of IP extensions in the UK, while Mitel Networks keeps its second position this quarter with a share of more than 25%. In the below 100 extensions market, Mitel Networks is the leading vendor for IP extensions representing more than a third of IP extensions sold in this area of the market. Cisco Systems is in second position here, with a share of more than 25%, and the company leads in the above 100 extensions market by a significant margin.
