Nasstar boosts its infrastructure capacity at a new data centre

Cloud computing provider Nasstar has substantially boosted its infrastructure capacity by expanding its hosting infrastructure to a new data centre in Fareham, Hampshire, from SSE Telecoms, the data centre and network business of the SSE Group.

Under its new contract with SSE Telecoms for additional server rack space and power, Nasstar will have the capacity to serve many thousands more Hosted Desktop users.

Since 1998 Nasstar has operated its hosted desktop services from a state-of-the-art London data centre, while maintaining a back up data centre in the Midlands.

Nasstar has already set up private gigabit connectivity between its existing London data centre and the new Hampshire site and the company’s new EMC storage networks have been installed in both the Hampshire and London data centres. The new EMC storage networks will enable hosted desktop data to be replicated across both data centres, providing its Hosted Desktop customers with the security and resilience they demand.

Nasstar has chosen to invest in UK-based data centres only. New research from the Cloud Industry Forum found that 85% of its members said their clients required their services to be UK hosted.

The benefit of UK centres is that they allow all customer data to remain hosted under a UK jurisdiction, while also meeting stringent EU data protection laws.

The additional facility at Hampshire also enables Nasstar to provide its service across two geographically diverse data centres, which are sufficiently far apart to satisfy the most robust disaster recovery requirements.

Charles Black, Nasstar’s CEO, said “We undertook considerable due diligence and looked at a number of UK data centre sites. We chose SSE Telecoms’ Hampshire facility because it has benefitted from substantial investment and, being operated by a power company, offered a much better power-to-rack space ratio than many others we considered. SSE Telecom’s Hampshire facility is acknowledged as a high specification UK co-location with N+1 power and uninterruptable supply. Building our Hosted Desktop service across two data centres puts us in a very strong position to serve the growing number of companies who are looking for a highly resilient UK based hosted desktop service.”

Chris Jagusz, Managing Director, of SSE Telecoms said “Our ability to provide guaranteed power as well as rack space at our Hampshire facility is attracting more and more clients such as Nasstar. We are delighted to win business from a company recognised for its innovation and customer service in hosted desktop services. We look forward to being able to provide Nasstar even more capacity as its business expands.”
