New CEO at Interoute Sets Tough Targets

With a track record of producing dramatic business growth in a crashed telecoms market, Gareth Williams, a telecoms industry veteran of 20 years standing, has been promoted to the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Interoute. Williams was previously President, global markets at Interoute, and he replaces Jim Kinsella as CEO, who has now moved to the role of chairman within Interoute.

Williams joined Interoute in February 2002 to help restructure the company, and over the past five and a half years has played a key role in growing Interoute from virtually nothing to a €200 million turnover business. The telecommunications market at this time had been flat while Interoute doubled its revenue year on year.

“We’ve driven Interoute through the telecoms depression, nearly doubling growth every year.” said Gareth Williams, CEO, Interoute. “It’s a hugely exciting time for Interoute: our pan European Next Generation Network is enabling all kind of innovations and services for our enterprise customers; we have an established presence in the emerging markets of “new Europe” and we’re continuing to expand East and South. My aim now is for the business to double its revenue within the next three years and increase market share in the enterprise sector. As Europe increasingly becomes the hub of the Telecoms world, we’re ideally placed to achieve our growth goals.”

Williams is well qualified to continue driving Interoute forward. He spent 13 years with BT International and later BT Global Services and Concert. Starting his career in product management he was responsible for delivering services on the first transatlantic fibre optic cable – TAT8 as well as delivering the first international 2Mbits circuit for Shell from London to The Hague

He continued his career into sales management and International assignments spending 3 years in Atlanta. Here he headed up BT’s business development activities and managed BT’s multi-billion euro international wholesale relationships with Western Europe.

In the late 90’s Gareth was selected to create a global specialist sales team addressing the emerging ISP, ASP and CDN market and with the merger of BT and ATT International businesses into Concert he assumed leadership of a much bigger global unit called data network sales for carriers, ISPs, ASPs and CDN providers for Concert.

In 2000 he was headhunted to lead the sales and marketing for QOS, a global start-up aimed at delivering integrated voice and data network solutions for largest corporate customers.
