Ofcom Announce New Chairman Sought for 2009

Ofcom has announced that David Currie will step down as Chairman of the Ofcom Board after Easter 2009

David was named in July 2002 as the inaugural Chairman of the then new regulator for the communications sector and has been instrumental, during two terms as Chairman, in guiding Ofcom through its formative years and establishing the strong reputation that Ofcom has built within the sector. David Currie’s appointment to Ofcom followed a long and distinguished career in economics, including roles in regulation, academia, the private sector and in advising governments.

David Currie was Professor of Economics at London Business School from 1988 to 2000 and Deputy Dean from 1992 to 1995 and again in 1999-2000. He was Dean of Cass Business School at City University from January 2001 to April 2007. He is Chairman of Trillium Investment Partners, a Board member of the Dubai Financial Services Authority and of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and an adviser to Unisys. He sits on the cross-benches in the House of Lords as Lord Currie of Marylebone.

The process to appoint his successor, which is an appointment by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, has begun and the intention is to advertise for the role of Chairman in September 2008.

David Currie said “I look forward to working with Ofcom well into 2009 on such crucial matters as the development of policy on public service broadcasting, NGA and consumer protection. I continue to enjoy working with such distinguished colleagues and I am delighted that we have been able to arrange an orderly succession process.”

Executive Members

Ofcom has appointed Stuart McIntosh, Competition Partner, and Peter Phillips, Partner, Strategy and Market Developments, as Executive Board members with effect from 1st July 2008.

Stuart McIntosh joined Ofcom as Competition Partner in January 2008 following two years as a leading Strategy Partner in the communications practice at IBM in the US. After graduation from the London School of Economics, Stuart joined the UK Government Economic Service, followed by two spells with management consultants Coopers & Lybrand/PWC – where he led PwC’s Telecoms Consulting Practice – separated by four years at BT as Head of Business Economics. After four years at boutique consultancy Adventis, Stuart joined IBM Europe in 2003, transferring in 2005 to New York.

Peter Phillips joined Ofcom in March 2006 with responsibility for its strategy, policy development, consumer policy, chief economist and market research teams. Previously he was Director of Business Development at the BBC, leading the sale of BBC Broadcast in 2005. Before that Peter was an investment banker in the mergers and acquisitions team at SG Warburg (now UBS) and a senior manager in the strategy consulting firm Bain & Company. He has a degree in Mathematics from Oxford, and is a trustee of the Crafts Council and the Nuffield Trust and an adviser to the Royal College of Physicians.
