Ofcom has published a call for evidence on net neutrality as part of its review of how the current framework is functioning. The principle of net neutrality is that internet users – not their broadband provider – have control over what they see and do online.
The regulator said that, since the current rules were put in place in 2016, there has been a number of important developments in the online world. Those developments include a surge in demand for capacity, the rollout of 5G and the increasing role of the cloud.
Ofcom’s review of the framework will look to ensure it continues to best serve people’s interests while supporting competition, innovation and investment.
The regulator’s call for evidence is open until 2 November 2021 and it aims to publish its initial findings in spring next year. The UK government will then review Ofcom’s recommendations before deciding if any changes should be made to the framework.
