PBX Market on the Rise

Analyst MZA has reported on the first quarter sales for 2006 and says Q1 proved to be a promising start to the year.

The UK PBX/IP PBX extensions market increased by 9% compared to Q1 2005 with good performances across the size spectrum. The market for systems with more than 100 extensions witnessed a positive annual growth of 12%, accounting for more than 40% of total extensions which reflects the development of this sector in 2005.

Strong rises of more than 20% were registered in each above 100 market extensions segment compared to the same quarter last year apart from the 1001+ extensions category which was the only segment to decline in this area. The below 100 market grew by 7% with the Micro PBX segment continuing the pick up seen last quarter, displaying an annual increase of 39% in terms of extensions.

Year-on-year growth was also exhibited in the 11-30 and 51-100 extensions categories with increases of 9 and 15% respectively which have complemented a quarter that has been buoyant for both the SMB and Enterprise PBX markets.

Dominant Players:

BT continues to dominate the UK supplier market with a 27% share of extensions which is equal to the share registered in the same period last year. In the manufacturer market, Nortel retains its lead with a 20% share, also matching Q1 2005, whilst Avaya hold second position. A positive quarter was also experienced by Cisco Systems ranked as third, and little separates them from Panasonic in fourth place, as both claim a 10% share of the UK PBX market this quarter followed by Siemens with 9%.

Q1 2006 was successful for BT in the more than 100 extensions supplier segment as its year-on-year share increased by 2%. Nortel also maintains pole position in terms of manufacturer shares in the larger enterprise sector. Cisco Systems still sit in second place with Avaya in third, each of the top three improving on their Q1 2005 above 100 market shares. Mitel Networks also enjoyed the quarter’s growth to come fourth with Siemens ranked in fifth position.

The below 100 extensions supplier market saw BT’s share decrease compared to last year by 2%. Panasonic is still the leading PBX manufacturer in the UK SME sector, recording a 15% share, closely followed by Nortel who hold onto second place. Avaya, however, is also not far behind and has gained 3% on its Q1 2005 share. Lake Communications remain fourth with a 9% manufacturer share of the sub 100 extensions market.

The IP Extensions Market

The beginning of 2006 was also good in terms of the UK IP extensions market which reached more than 25% of total extensions for the first time with Cisco Systems continuing to be at the forefront of the manufacturers. As a supplier, BT represented 28% of IP extensions.

The best performance this quarter came in the below 100 market where IP extensions more than doubled to account for 12% compared to the volume recorded in Q1 2005. Growth was slower in the above 100 segment, however; IP extensions now account for 45% of extensions compared to 40% in the same period last year.

Overall, Mitel Networks displayed further improvement, now representing more than a quarter of total IP extensions as well as topping the sub 100 market with a 30% share of IP extensions shipped in the SME sector followed by Cisco Systems. Nevertheless, Cisco continue its IP extensions lead in the high-end market claiming 40% with Mitel in second place with a 25% share of the market for more than 100 extensions.
