PBX's Moving to Software-Based Systems

Soft PBX vendor Swyx wanted Comms Business Magazine to point out that Analyst Canalys' Converged Telephony Channel Panel has reported that over 80% of the panel believes that PBXs are evolving from proprietary hardware to software running on industry standard servers operating on open standards independent of hardware.

This move towards software is happening rapidly but the shift to open standards will take time. Panellists believe that 'The most progressive vendor is Swyx…' and 'Swyx is one of the open standards leaders'

The Canalys report also estimates that by 2009 SIP will be the dominant open standard accounting for an estimated 57% of IP line shipments. However, 30% believe that fewer features available on SIP phones restrict sales. Bearing this in mind panellists still see 'SIP as the way forward. Vendors that do not support it will cease to exist.'
