The girls, from Years 10 to 13 at Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School, played for 55 hours and 20 minutes, which is the equivalent of 40 back-to-back netball games, to get themselves considered for the Guinness Book of Records.
They raised money for The Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Breakthrough Breast Cancer and have been preparing for the ordeal since before Christmas.
A total of 20 girls took part, playing in two teams of seven with three substitutes. The final score was 2,217 goals for the Breakthrough Breast Cancer team to 1,922 goals by the Cystic Fibrosis Trust team.
Headmaster Marc Morris, who thought up the idea of the challenge and was chief coach along with PE teacher Sue Smith, said: “I could not be more proud of the girls. They have pulled together as a team and supported each other through pain and tears.”
The girls started their marathon at noon on Thursday and finished at 7.20pm on the Saturday.
A team of 60 independent witnesses, 28 medical staff, more than 20 umpires and fellow students and staff providing food and support helped the girls in their successful challenge.
“These girls put themselves through a highly demanding endurance test to raise money for worthwhile causes and they should be commended for their commitment. We are proud to be associated with their successful challenge,” said Pennine’s Marketing Manager Belinda McGee.
