Polycom RMX 2000 and HDX Series Attain Nortel Designation

Polycom, the provider of unified collaborative communications solutions, today announced that its RMX 2000 real-time media conferencing platform and HDX series of high definition telepresence solutions have successfully completed compatibility testing through the Nortel Developer Program and now carry the designation Nortel Compatible Product.

The RMX 2000 (version 2.02) and HDX telepresence endpoints (version 2.02) were tested in a Nortel lab facility and are verified as compatible with Nortel MCS 5100 (version 4.0). The Polycom RMX 2000 and HDX series provide a high definition visual communications solution that enables users to communicate and collaborate more effectively across distances. The face-to-face visual communications experience can improve productivity, accelerate decision-making and reduce the costs and carbon emissions associated with business travel by reducing the need for people to travel for meetings.

The Polycom HDX series offers flexible, high-definition telepresence solutions for a range of meeting environments from small, medium and large meeting areas, to custom, integrated-room environments and the HDX 4000 personal telepresence solution for executive desktops and offices. The RMX 2000 enables seamless multipoint visual communications and the ability to connect different types of video systems at different resolutions and on different network environments within the same meeting at the highest quality levels possible. Receiving Nortel Compatible Product designation assures customers that the Polycom RMX 2000 platform and HDX endpoints will work seamlessly in their Nortel MCS 5100 collaboration environment.

Integrating visual communications into unified communications environments such as Nortel’s is a strategic initiative under Polycom’s VC2 strategy, which is designed to move customers from standalone video conferencing applications and technology to more tightly integrated visual communications solutions that are simple, secure, and scalable. Polycom delivered initial integration for Nortel environments with its MGC multi-point conference solution and VSX endpoints in June 2005 and is now extending integration to its latest generation of solutions.

The Multimedia Communication Server (MCS) 5100 is a leading unified communications solution which seamlessly integrates IP Telephony, multimedia conferencing, instant messaging (IM), presence and other collaboration tools for employees — anywhere, anytime, increasing user mobility, enhancing productivity, improving the effectiveness of communications and reducing communication costs.

The joint solution allows MCS 5100 users to easily initiate high-quality video calls from the familiar user interface of the Nortel Multimedia PC Client (MMPC) to Polycom HDX telepresence users. In addition, MMPC and HDX users can easily join multipoint conferences on the RMX 2000 along with PSTN, H.323, and phone participants using Nortel phones registered to Nortel’s CS 1000 IP PBX.

Conference security is provided by the RMX 2000 password hierarchy, which allows automatic generation of conference, guest, and chairperson passwords. Conference security is also guaranteed through features such as conference lock, participant entry/exit tones and name announcement, chairperson required to start conference, and conference auto termination based on flexible rules, for example, when the last participant exits the conference.

Solution scalability is achieved through direct integration using the lightweight Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). Alternative integration approaches through proprietary Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) or through signaling and media gateways would limit the scalability of the solution.
