SMC Networks Launches New Enterprise Wireless AP

LAN hardware and broadband connectivity device vendor SMC Networks has announced the availability of its EliteConnect 802.11b/g Wireless Access Point SMC2552W-G2 for enterprises requiring peak range, security and performance. The SMC2552W-G2 provides enterprise class wireless LAN connectivity for up to 64 users.

The vendor says the AP is ideal for organisations supporting a mobile workforce, the Wi-Fi certified access point offers a host of advanced features including Multiple SSIDs to allow the creation of virtual access points with one physical unit, Quality of Service (QoS) by using the Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM) standard for VoIP networks, SNMP v.3 management for integration into Enterprise wired networks, and high output power to cover wider areas with fewer access points. Coverage and range can be extended further with optional high gain antennas.

The SMC2552W-G2 offers support for Wireless Distribution System (WDS). This allows bridging and repeating between other SMC enterprise access points to extend wireless coverage, without the need to run Ethernet cables. Up to six WDS bridge or repeater links can be specified for each unit.

Set-up and management are simplified via an easy-to-use web interface, Command Line Interface (CLI), or SMC’s EliteView Management Software for SNMP-based management. Support for IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet (PoE) allows for simplified installation in areas where power outlets aren’t available and reduces installation cost by using standard Cat. 5 cable to provide power and data to the access point.

To counter security concerns, which are a key consideration for enterprises, the access point provides enterprise level authentication and encryption including Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA/ WPA2), up to 152-bit WEP encryption, IEEE 802.1x authentication, 1024 MAC address authentication and disabled SSID broadcast.
