Figures released this week by the British Chambers of Commerce claimed that although small businesses are increasingly using IT as the foundation for their communications infrastructure, few understand how to get the most from the technology in the long-term, especially when it comes to security provision.
The survey results echo recent findings by communications provider, Thus, which revealed that 73% of SMEs fail to take advantage of communications resources such as remote and flexible working due to a lack of IT support.
As companies increasingly depend on communications, technology is frequently heralded as the answer to problems related to productivity and seen as a way to reduce costs. However, in the SME sector, technology is not a simple plug and play panacea. SMEs need to ensure that investment in IT communication is carefully planned and based on strategic approaches to the business rather than as a short term fix.
