SMEs Using Insecure IT for Crucial Communications

* Figures highlight 40% of SMEs have no firewall in place

* Ensure long-term strategy for technology ROI, says Thus

Figures released this week by the British Chambers of Commerce claimed that although small businesses are increasingly using IT as the foundation for their communications infrastructure, few understand how to get the most from the technology in the long-term, especially when it comes to security provision.

The survey results echo recent findings by communications provider, Thus, which revealed that 73% of SMEs fail to take advantage of communications resources such as remote and flexible working due to a lack of IT support.

As companies increasingly depend on communications, technology is frequently heralded as the answer to problems related to productivity and seen as a way to reduce costs. However, in the SME sector, technology is not a simple plug and play panacea. SMEs need to ensure that investment in IT communication is carefully planned and based on strategic approaches to the business rather than as a short term fix.

It is essential that SMEs work with service providers who are able to offer business-grade applications and bespoke solutions. Specialist service providers such as Thus are able to tailor communications solutions and offer enhanced firewall, anti-phishing and anti-pharming protection to all customers, giving businesses the flexibility to choose the solution and security that best meets their business needs.

Dan Cole, head of product, at Thus commented: "This research confirms exactly what we're seeing the marketplace. Security is a common problem for small businesses; they excel at their core business but rarely have specific IT managers on site. As they look towards IT-based communications, they become increasingly vulnerable if there is no solution in place. Service providers should recognise this and work with SMEs to develop long-term support strategies."
