Stagecoach South West invests in digital radio

Premier Communication Electronics (PCE) has a signed a deal to provide digital radios and despatcher software for Stagecoach South West’s 300-strong fleet of buses that serve the Exeter, Exmouth, Torquay and Barnstaple areas.

Exeter’s two-way radio experts PCE will start rolling out the new Motorola MOTOTRBO system in April to completely modernise Stagecoach South West’s in-bus communications system.

PCE, based on Sowton Industrial Estate, Exeter, designed this bespoke solution that includes 300 fixed mobile radios, three strategically placed repeaters and a new very high frequency (VHF) OFCOM licence that together will give the bus company clearer audio quality and improved coverage.

The Motorola MOTOTRBO digital solution will replace an aging analogue legacy system. A digital radio solution offers privacy from potential scanners, as well as extended battery life and the ability to deliver enhanced coverage and voice clarity. Stagecoach South West customers can be safe in the knowledge that staff can summon back up and have emergency call capability in response to incidents or unplanned situations as they happen.

Karen Langley, managing director for PCE, said: “Stagecoach South West has committed to an investment to migrate to a digital radio system that will enable its employees to benefit from improved communications between its buses and depots.

“Our skilled engineers will deploy the new solution during a three month period to fit in with the day to day requirements of Stagecoach South West’s busy schedule. We look forward to working closely with them to achieve a modern two-way radio communications system that befits the level of investment Stagecoach South West has made in its Devon bus network.”

The radio solution includes TRBOnet software to help the despatch depot managers monitor all calls to its radios. It is also primed for the future with data platform capabilities and the potential to integrate with advanced features, such as IT-enabled applications.

PCE, who currently service Stagecoach’s legacy analogue system, will provide an ongoing maintenance contract to service, repair and ensure service availability is maximised for this key requirement.

Mike Bishop, Stagecoach South West’s engineering director, said: “The implementation of this state-of-the-art digital radio system will benefit both our staff and our customers. I’m very pleased to be working in partnership with this locally-based organisation.”
