Surf Telecoms, a communications provider, is ready for significant growth in its business with increased UK coverage of its communications services. The company is currently installing a new next-generation infrastructure that will extend its optical and Ethernet services nationwide.

The development is designed to support growing demand and predicted growth from Surf Telecoms’ new and existing customers, which range from utility industry sister company Western Power Distribution through top-tier telecoms service providers to academic institutions.

Surf’s Director Philip Allen explains: “Once the new backbone is in place, we will be able to offer customers an unprecedented range of services supported by a state-of-the-art communications infrastructure with the functionality and flexibility to handle high bandwidth traffic across a national telecommunications network.”

The two-phased project, based on Transmode's Intelligent WDM optical platform, has started with an upgrade of Surf's existing infrastructure in the South West and Wales. This will be followed by a new network across the Midlands.

The national network development shows Surf’s commitment to extending its footprint and range of services to meet the growing and diversifying needs of the UK’s communications sector. Surf Telecoms already supports national communications networks such as Janet, which connects UK research and education organisations.

Phil Allen added, “This new telecommunications backbone will include a combination of Legacy and Gigabit Ethernet enterprise services over the same infrastructure. This will provide customers with a resilient and secure core network with open standards that will scale and meet the requirements of all our future IP services.”

Headquartered in Bristol, Surf Telecoms operates from regional offices across the Midlands, South West and Wales offering quality, standard and bespoke communications services including Dark Fibre, Optical Wavelengths, Ethernet over MPLS, Storage Area Networks and Communications Sites with secure Colocation facilities.
