Wowza Media Systems, a media server software company, today announced that Telefónica has deployed Wowza Media Server software as a component in its newly announced multiscreen content delivery network (CDN)

One of the largest telecommunications companies in the world, Telefónica will rely on Wowza Media Server software to deliver a range of services for Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight-capable computers, smartphones, and tablets; iPhone/iPad, Android, and other 3GPP smartphones and tablets; as well as a variety of additional video-capable devices.

"Wowza's unified approach to media serving enables us to build an infinitely scalable network that meets the needs of our customers to deliver media to the full range of screens and devices," said Fernando Fronza, video and CDN global services director at Telefónica. "Wowza is providing us not only with a highly cost-effective media server, but also with a robust platform for high-value services that complements our ongoing development through Telefónica Research and Development."

The recently announced Telefónica Global Delivery Service has already deployed more than 40 content delivery nodes in 10 countries, and it is expected to end the year with nodes in 22 cities with an aggregate capacity of 600 Gbps. Telefónica further plans to increase the capacity of its CDN to more than 2 Tbps by the end of 2012. The Global Delivery Service is currently available in Europe and North America, and it also has an overwhelming presence in Latin America, including Brazil, Argentina, Peru, and Chile. In Spain, Telefónica currently provides content delivery services to large corporate customers.

"We are very pleased to be selected by Telefónica as a component of the company's CDN. Telefónica's deployment further validates the value of Wowza Media System's industrial-strength software, our singular focus on media servers, and our devoted support," said David Stubenvoll, CEO and co-founder of Wowza Media Systems. "We look forward to expanding our relationship with Telefónica in the years to come."

Wowza Media Server 3 software simultaneously streams live and on-demand media to PCs, smartphones, tablets, and IPTV set-top boxes. It provides a single extensible platform for a variety of high-value features, including live transcoding for adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming; any-screen, time-shifted playback; and premium content delivery with multiplatform digital rights protection (DRM).
