Timico to invest £7m in Virtualisation Infrastructure

Business to business ISP Timico has announced that it is investing £7 million in a major new internet infrastructure project at its corporate Headquarters in Newark, Nottinghamshire.

The building will house a brand new data centre together with a state-of-the-art Network Operations Centre (NOC) to support Timico’s growing managed network services business. The initial build will cost £5m with a further £2m planned on increasing capacity over the next 3 years.

The facility, which when full will house 150 x 4KW racks, will allow Timico to offer regional customers a high quality data centre capacity with diverse connectivity to the internet via both London and Manchester. The Newark operation will also provide some of the ISP’s existing corporate customers with additional Disaster Recovery resources outside of the M25.

“Our biggest focus is going to be in the private cloud” says co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, Trefor Davies. “Whilst we have customers waiting to locate physical equipment in Newark the bulk of the investment is going to be in a virtualised infrastructure. Timico have been offering its customers a virtualised platform for over three years and this will represent a step up in that capability.

“Also many of our customers already use virtualisation internally. This investment will allow them to seamlessly evolve their Disaster Recover strategy to include resources maintained in the cloud. The cost of connectivity for Wide Area Networks has plummeted in recent times and this makes distribution of such resources very cost effective.”

Timico will be able to provide these services nationwide with facilities in Fareham on the south coast, London Docklands and in Newark. The NOC will represent a step up in Timico’s network monitoring capabilities which, together with more details of the virtualisation platform, will be announced later in 2011.
