Tiscali Unimpressed by BT 21CN Next Generation Wholesale Broadband Service

BT has announced the introduction of its new family of next generation broadband services to communications providers in the UK. The new wholesale service, called Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC), runs over BT’s 21st Century Network (21CN). It will initially be available from exchanges serving around one million homes and businesses. The service will progressively roll out across the country, rising to a potential footprint of 10 million homes and businesses by the spring of 2009.

WBC is the first mass market product to be delivered over BT’s 21CN and will offer communications providers greater service differentiation and the option to provide end users with broadband that delivers greater control, choice and flexibility, as well as higher broadband speeds. Line speeds will be subject to individual line conditions.

Where end customers are connected to a 21CN broadband enabled exchange, communications providers will be able to choose to supply them with services based on the new wholesale service.

Sally Davis, CEO, BT Wholesale, said: “In order to support the rising tide of new multimedia applications and multiplay services delivered over broadband, communications providers require a new set of tools to enhance the broadband experience. Wholesale Broadband Connect has been developed with this in mind, offering communications providers a wide range of functions that will help set them apart in this rapidly changing market.”

Commenting on the announcement Tiscali noted “News that BT Wholesale is to offer broadband to businesses ‘up to 24Mbps’ may not come as a surprise to you, but how many of your readers are aware that ADSL2+ is not only already available to them, but companies (maybe even their competitors?) are already benefiting?

Marketing Director Lance Spencer said, “Tiscali already has over 1,000 actual customers using ADSL2+, and are seeing a rapid growth in both small business and larger enterprises adopting these new technologies.”

Tiscali launched its ADSL2+ service four months ago (in January 2008), available through channel partners.

“ADSL2+ is available to more than half of all enterprise sites. In fact, Tiscali is the only provider capable of delivering ADSL2+ on such a large scale to channel partners and their customers.”

The service is already available from at least 650 (and rising) of Tiscali’s unbundled exchanges with plans for further increases in this number by the end of the year.

Tiscali is also at an advanced stage of trialling ADSL2+ Annexe M which gives businesses even higher Upstream rates on their broadband. This will also be available from Tiscali’s 900 unbundled exchanges, rising to 1,000 by the end of the year.
