USEI Uses Masergy’s Global MPLS Network to Consistently Transmit Live Broadcast Video

During 2011 Japanese Tsunami, Masergy Network Helped USEI and Major U.S. Broadcast Network Transmit Live Remotes via IP from Tokyo to U.S.

Electrodynamics Inc. (USEI) is using Masergy’s global MPLS network to consistently and reliably transmit live broadcast media programming for customers in Asia, Europe and North America.

“With Masergy’s premiere global MPLS network, we have dispelled the myth that high-quality live video cannot be delivered over IP,” said Satoshi Ono, director of business development for USEI. “Not only have we made it possible, but we have consistently delivered high-quality live video feeds for some of the largest broadcasting companies in the world.”

This capability was illustrated during the tsunami that hit Japan last year. Just after the disaster hit, a major U.S. television network selected USEI to set up and transmit live feeds from Tokyo to USEI’s teleport in Brewster, Wash., and then across the Masergy network to New York. When a strong aftershock damaged undersea cables, the Masergy circuit quickly and automatically re-routed.

“During the disturbance and quick fail-over, we only lost 2,000 data packets, which equaled a mere one-second glitch in the feed,” said Satoshi “All other networks were down for days, but the television network, via USEI and Masergy, continued its live remotes from Tokyo to the U.S.”

The Masergy network has been such a success for USEI that Satoshi says it has created an entirely new business model for the company.

“We learned that if you have the right network with the right equipment and the right configuration in place, video over IP and MPLS will not only work, but will work reliably and affordably,” he said.

Chris Carr, director of video markets for Masergy, says, “When transmitting live broadcast programming content across our private IP network, broadcasters are guaranteed 100 percent quality of service. Our network securely delivers live transmissions with no degradation in signal quality.”
