Virtus selects Geo Networks to deliver dark fibre

Geo Networks, a provider of dedicated fibre networks, has announced a ten year deal with data centre specialist Virtus, providing connectivity to its new Enfield-based data centre.

Backed by two leading institutional investors, Brockton Capital and Frogmore, Virtus is a well-capitalised and financially-secure developer and operator in the co-location space. The Enfield data centre provides 26,866 sq. ft. of data floor space to a varied range of data intensive customers; including system integrators, Cloud organisations as well as financial services and media companies.

The fully resilient 19km dedicated fibre infrastructure will connect Virtus directly to Geo’s 3,000km national backbone. The majority of the network will be delivered via the London sewer system which will ensure Virtus’ customers will benefit from one of the most secure and robust assets in the UK. Geo’s dedicated fibre model will ensure Virtus’ customers have access to virtually unlimited capacity over a carrier-grade national network, connected into all major telehouses with over 100 points of presence (PoPs) across the UK.

Warren Barrie, UK MD of Virtus, said: “With a fast growing customer base of mission critical data users, we wanted to ensure our customers had access to a connectivity provider who could offer a highly scalable, high performance network to anywhere in the UK. We only work with ‘best in class’ suppliers and are confident that Geo’s network will support the long term needs of Virtus and our future customers.”

A key driver in Virtus’ decision to select Geo was its ability to provide an open access network, allowing a full spectrum of carriers to use the new infrastructure. Illustrating the point, the new deal will also take in a leading global provider of IP-based services into the data centre as a second connectivity provider.

Chris Smedley, Chief Executive of Geo, said: “Our work with Virtus highlights the growth and extension of our network into yet another key data centre. Geo provides network infrastructure to over 100 public and private data centres and exchanges, connecting both metropolitan and peripheral locations. With data centres being one of our fastest growing sectors, we are well placed to meet Virtus’ requirements.”
