WBC Reaches 50% Coverage of UK

More than half of UK homes and businesses can now get a faster broadband service – thanks to Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC)

BT Wholesale’s new service – offering an up to 24Mbit/s broadband service – is now available from more than 730 exchanges across the UK.

Already more than 550,000 end users are enjoying BT Wholesale’s ADSL2+ copper next generation broadband service, with more than 20-30,000 end user customers being added each week.

Running over BT’s 21st Century Network, WBC offers communications providers (CPs) the option to provide their broadband customers with greater control, choice and flexibility as well as higher speeds. It supports the growing demand for high-speed access to a range of online services - including television, gaming online and multiple voice over internet protocol (VoIP) services.

And the growth continues, with BT Wholesale significantly expanding WBC availability.

“We are on track to deliver WBC copper services from exchanges serving around 14m (55%) UK homes and businesses by the end of March 2010 and, subject to market demand, BT Wholesale has announced its intention to roll out to exchanges serving around 20 million (75%) by Spring 2011.

As well as expanding the footprint, BT Wholesale significantly reduced its WBC ADSL2+ wholesale prices in January 2010.

From 1 January this year, WBC bandwidth charges dropped by almost 50 per cent and WBC rental costs standardised at the lowest previous price.

BT Wholesale already offers broadband from exchanges 99 per cent of UK homes and businesses, offering up to 8Mbit/s service and now we are rolling out higher speed services.

A new era of broadband is emerging that is going to change the way it is consumed forever – and fundamental to this change is choice. It’s no longer a ‘one size fits all’ broadband world. We are moving rapidly into the broadband ‘mixed economy’. BT Wholesale offers a mix of copper services – including fixed, up to 8Mbit/s and up to 24Mbit/s - and our Ethernet service supports mobile broadband services too.”
