ZTE sends first ever data transmission at 10 Terabits per second

ZTE Corporation, a global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, has broken the previous world record for single-channel data transmission with a recorded single-channel rate of 10Tbps (terabits per second) over 640km of single-mode fibre optic cable. This is the equivalent of sending 160 HD movies per second*.

The results of the test transmission were presented at the recent OFC/NFOEC 2011 conference in Los Angeles, U.S.A. This new world record lays a foundation for future research into optical transmission technology with higher single-channel rates, using technologies that will be at the heart of the internet of the future.

The experiment used ZTE’s patented “carrier generation technology” to generate 112 coherent and frequency-locked optical sub-carrier signals; with each sub-carrier bearing 100Gbps optical signals, and successfully achieved optical signals with a single-channel rate of 11.2Tbps, a net 10Tbps line rate plus overheads such as forward error correction (FEC).

In an era where the global optical communications industry is entering 100Gbps transmission, all mainstream manufacturers are not only promoting the practical deployment of 100Gbps but also actively seeking candidate technologies at higher bit rates of 400Gbps, 1Tbps, and beyond. With rapid growth in demand for higher bandwidth, single channel 10Tbps will be the transmission rate for future telecommunication networks.

Over the years, ZTE has invested substantially in bearer optical network transmission technology; developing 100G model equipment and ultra-long-haul (ULH) transmission products, based on 100Gbps product deployment, as well as being engaged in the research of beyond-100Gbps high-speed signal transmission technology. Following intensive research with the world’s newest technologies, ZTE has tackled a number of core technical issues in high-speed optical transmission technology and has become the driving force in this area.
