Comms Council UK shares PSTN switch-off guidance

Comms Council UK has published information for industry and consumers about the upcoming PSTN switch-off.

The two documents have been tailored for consumers and industry. The former includes background information, details about the upgrade, what network changes will mean for services, access to emergency services, other considerations, timeframes, and FAQs.

The industry-focused guidance outlines what is happening and why, challenges to overcome, what industry should be doing now, as well as events, meetings and consultations of interest. In addition, the trade association has included more information on the Great Voice Switchover section of its website.

Tracey Wright, chair of Comms Council UK’s industry developments group and the managing director of Magrathea, discussed the need for education about the upcoming changes and greater awareness of what this means for consumers.

She said, “Industry is aware that this process has been coming down the track for many years, however, it is now rearing itself into view. As consumer campaigning hasn’t been the primary focus so far, we believe now is the time to provide them with more education on the impact it could have.

“The switch-off will have an effect on consumers and businesses alike. While we’re confident the outcomes will be positive, people must be prepared for the transition. We would encourage the government and Ofcom to work with industry, consumer groups and other third parties to communicate the changes to ensure a smooth transition.”
