Ofcom prepares to reallocate telephone number ranges

Telephony
Ofcom is proposing to take back telephone number ranges from communications providers that have dissolved, gone into liquidation or closed.

The regulator allocates phone numbers to telecoms companies in blocks of 10,000 for them to distribute to their customers.

To ensure this finite national resource is used appropriately, Ofcom occasionally takes back numbering ranges from companies that are no longer trading.

Ofcom has published a list of communications providers that are either dissolved or in liquidation. It intends to make the numbers allocated to these companies available for alternative uses.

Before moving forward, the regulator is seeking information to clarify whether certain numbers are in use by other consumers or companies.

Representations may be submitted online until Friday 10 November 2023.
