Motorola has completed a successful trial to demonstrate the feasibility of alternative power systems to support remote GSM basestations.
The result: a combination of solar cells and wind turbines can generate 1,200W in a continual cycle; enough to drive a mid-sized basestation and support a microwave backhaul installation. The aim is to reduce operators’ dependence on mains power and remove the need for generators that require continual refuelling and security, especially in developing countries.
