Locayta, a provider of search and merchandising technology for online publishers and retailers, has announced that it is the developer of the newly launched iPhone application for BT Directories, part of BT. The application enables users to search over two million UK business and services.

The new BT Exchanges iPhone application, available from the iTunes App Store, enables users to locate nearby businesses and services, such as restaurants and tradesmen, in a quick and effective manner. The application finds businesses in a category and automatically detects the user’s location using the iPhone’s in-built GPS. The user can access a comprehensive list of relevant local businesses, ranked by proximity, with directions, maps, and even ratings from other customers. The business can then be contacted easily by phone, email or text and its details can be saved to the iPhone.

BT Exchanges, part of BT Directories, one of the UK’s largest providers of business classified advertising and directories, already uses Locayta search technology to process over 600,000 online searches every day. For this new iPhone application, the Locayta search engine finds businesses most relevant to the user’s needs through a combination of a weighting algorithm, feedback from user behaviour and a specially designed geo-location radiating search.

David Gummer, general manager at BT Directories Online said: "Key to the continued success of BT Directories is our ability to deliver comprehensive, intelligent and accurate data to our customers in a rapid and accessible fashion, whether they’re in the office, at home or on the move. Locayta, with their exceptionally flexible search engine, have a track record of building tailored search solutions that are specific to the needs of BT Directories’ end users and classified advertisers. This new application plays an important role in our strategic development.”
