Cable & Wireless to offer FMC

C&W intends to use its spectrum licence for GSM Guard Bands to offer innovative fixed mobile convergence solutions to its high-end corporate customer base, it announced today.

C&W says customers have been asking for fixed-mobile solutions for some time and want the convenience of a single handset, bill and supplier - this licence enables C&W to respond to these customer demands.

Benefits include savings for customers of between 20 and 30% on their current mobile spend - as well as increased productivity and service simplicity.

The ability to offer wireless solutions to customers has been core to its global offering for many years. As a mobile network operator in 19 countries, it can leverage many of these assets, such as IT and network, roaming agreements, customer services capabilities - and already has significant purchasing power with the handset and network manufacturers.

In addition, C&W has the commercial and technical expertise needed and is already conducting fixed-mobile customer trials in the UK to gain additional experience.

Jim Marsh, CEO of C&W UK, stated; "We are delighted that our spectrum bid has been successful and was achieved at a competitive rate. Our focus will be on delivering a service-differentiated solution to our customers."

David Ellis, Head of Voice at C&W UK, added; "Our bid price was based on common sense. We'll be investing the money we saved on the licence in delivering a superior service to our customers."
