Lebara Mobile becomes first MVNO to own fibre infrastructure

Geo Networks, a provider of dedicated fibre networks, has extended its reach in the mobile space by winning a contract with Lebara Mobile, part of the wider Lebara Group. Lebara has doubled its data usage year-on-year in a fiercely competitive market and with mobile data traffic set to exceed 14,000 petabytes by 2015, it needed a network that would support it through its rapid expansion.

The deal, for an initial period of three years, will see Geo provide Lebara with a 70km diverse ring connecting its network to three data centres across London, from Telehouse North, to London Docklands (Sovereign House) through to North London (Powergate). The dedicated dark fibre will give Lebara full management of and control over its network, enabling it to focus on its strategic vision of being a major contender in the fast growing ethnic-focused mobile market.

Lebara Chief Technology Officer, Shyam Mardikar, commented, “Lebara is committed to delivering high-quality, low-cost mobile services to our customers. In an increasingly competitive environment, it’s more important than ever to have a resilient and flexible network to ensure instant access to high quality mobile networks for our customers.

“Geo’s dark fibre gives us an unprecedented level of control over our network and what we use it for, which isn’t usually an option for an MVNO. This means we can expand how and when we need to. Laying the fibre in London’s sewer network delivers a high level of security and added peace of mind.”

The fibre circuits running between the three data centres are dedicated and, as with all Geo’s dedicated fibre, will solely carry Lebara Mobile traffic.

Geo’s Sales Director, Wholesale and Mobile, Nick Ballard, added, “Lebara is working in one of the fastest growing mobile markets in the UK at the moment and it is vital to not just win customers with appealing offers, but retain them with best in class service. Lebara will benefit from an easily scalable solution which it can expand to meet the needs of its growing business. Dark fibre can carry petabit levels of traffic and so is a fully future proofed solution.”
